German Army Rucksack – M44 – WWII

Designed for late-war practicality, this German Model 1944 (M44) canvas rucksack features a roomy main compartment secured by a drawstring “neck” closure and protective top flap. Two medium external pockets provide quick access to rations and small gear, while the internal cotton pocket is ideal for organizing items such as cooking gear, cleaning supplies, or a sewing kit.

The pack can be carried as part of a field loadout attached to Y-straps, or worn as a standalone rucksack using the supplied removable shoulder straps—making it a versatile piece for both historically accurate impressions and modern use.

The M44 rucksack was a late-war evolution inspired by the earlier M31 mountain rucksack. It was introduced to replace the Tornister 39 and, thanks to its capacity and practicality, became part of the general marching order for German ground troops from 1944 onward. This pattern reflects the shift toward simpler, functional equipment that could be issued widely while still meeting the needs of field service.
