Balalaika Prima Deluxe – Walnut Stave Body
Our Balalaika Prima Deluxe combines traditional Russian design with modern craftsmanship. The slightly bowed body is built using stave construction in rich walnut, giving the instrument strength, stability, and a warm, resonant tone. The light spruce-style soundboard is accented with walnut trim that both decorates and protects the top where your strumming hand naturally falls.
The three metal strings are tuned above middle C to A–E–E (1st–3rd). The first string is the thinnest and runs over more frets than the second and third strings, allowing expressive melodic playing. Tuning is simple: use a piano or electronic tuner as your reference and fine-tune the tension on each peg by tightening or loosening the small screw on top of the tuning machine.
To play, the left hand fingers the notes on the neck while the index finger of the right hand strums high on the soundboard near the neck. Whether you are a folk musician, historical reenactor, or a collector of world instruments, this Balalaika Prima Deluxe delivers authentic sound and eye-catching beauty.
Each instrument ships with a protective gig bag and a pick so you can start playing right out of the box.
The balalaika most likely evolved from the Oriental dombra, an instrument still played in modern-day Kazakhstan. Knowledge of the dombra was brought into Russia through Mongol trade and conquest, and over time it underwent structural changes that gave birth to the balalaika.
Embraced by Russian peasants, the balalaika became known as an instrument that could shift effortlessly from joyful dance tunes to songs of sorrow. Folk ballads often poked fun at authority and, for that reason, there were times when both the Orthodox Church and the State tried to ban the instrument. Despite this, the balalaika reached peak popularity in the early 18th century.
In the late 19th century, the balalaika was refined further, adopting the now-classic triangular body seen on this instrument. Musician and innovator Vassily Vassilievich Andreyev helped transform it from a village folk instrument into a respected concert instrument. His ensemble, later named The Great Russian Imperial Balalaika Orchestra, introduced the sound of the balalaika to audiences far beyond Russia. The instrument was also carried by common folk who fled Russia during times of war, spreading its unique voice across the world.

Special Note on Strings
Strings are not covered under warranty. Manufacturers recommend changing the strings every 3–4 months, depending on use. It is always wise to keep an extra set on hand in case a string breaks. After each playing session, wipe the strings down with a clean, dry cloth to remove oils and perspiration. If your balalaika has been stored for an extended period, consider installing a fresh set of strings before playing again for the best tone and reliability.
