British 1853 Pattern Light Cavalry Sword – Replica with Steel Scabbard
Price:
$204.99
This reproduction of the 1853 Pattern Light Cavalry Sword features a slightly curved, fullered blade forged from EN9 high carbon steel. The unsharpened edge makes it ideal for reenactments, ceremonial use, or historical display. The distinctive three-bar steel hilt echoes earlier designs while improving durability through a full tang that forms part of the grip. That grip is made from hard rubber scales, checkered and riveted for secure handling. The blade base is etched with a replica of the original maker’s mark – “John Harvey of Birmingham.” This battle-ready sword includes a steel scabbard with dual hanging rings for belt suspension or wall mounting.
Though often overshadowed by the 1822 model, the 1853 Pattern Saber was more widely carried during the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade. It marked a significant evolution in British cavalry arms, serving both light and heavy units. The shift to a single standard saber signaled the end of separate slashing (light cavalry) and thrusting (heavy cavalry) swords. Its robust three-bar hilt design was the last of its kind before the British military transitioned to solid-plate guards. Due to its practicality, many of these swords were later exported to America and used by Confederate cavalry during the Civil War.
