The Knights Templar—formally the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ—were founded in Jerusalem in 1118 by nine crusader knights. Recognized by Pope Innocent II in 1139 and confirmed at the Council of Troyes in 1128 under Pope Honorius II, the Order received the white mantle symbolizing purity; Pope Eugene III later added the distinctive red cross in 1146. Installed by King Baldwin II in a wing of the royal palace believed to be Solomon’s Temple, the brotherhood became known as the Templars.
