Scottish Hand Targe

MSRP:$125.00

Our Smaller Scottish Hand Targe is made with wood, and overlaid in leather; It is accented with numerous brass studs and brass shield boss. The suede-covered back of the shield is finished with a thick leather arm straps.

The term targe refers to various types of shields used by infantry troops from the 13th to 16th centuries. The design was first developed in Spain. From the early 17th century, until the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the Scottish Highlander's main means of defense in battle was his targe. Although some targe designs appear to have been more popular than others, there is very little to indicate that there ever were ''clan'' designs.

Readers; Since it is apparent that the fellow who creates the write ups for Scots Products is a "Bloody Saxon"; how about some facts? This Targe[sometimes spelled 'target'] is a LowLanders and or Calvary shield. The size is suited to horseback war. This one is well made, smells like maple behind the good quality leather and brass work. As a wall display, beware, it is small and may get 'lost' in the decoration/display you have created. It would look best paired with a display of a, say, Bollocks Dirk. With a sword, its going to look 'out of scale'. I have worked with both wood and leather and cannot fault the workmanship nor the quality of the leather. Its a good piece of Scots History
