The Fetter Lane Sword - 8th Century Saxon - Damascus Blade - PRS413D
This highly detailed sword recreates the fine swords available to champions, chieftains and kings of the late 8th Century and is closely based on the surviving components of the prized Fetter Lane sword which is part of the collection of the British Museum. The blade is damascus steel which was skillfully created when different steels were pounded and melded together into a single blade by the bladesmith. Original swords of this type had pattern welded blades and like Damascus they too had visible patterning which could be seen throughout the blade. The hilt is well-cast with a bronze finish; like the original it has different designs on either side of the hilt. Bands of polished tin adorn the guard and pommel - on original swords tin was valued as a decorative element because of its scarcity and likeness to silver in appearance. The composite pommel was riveted together in its final construction because original swords of this type had 2-part pommels which were completed by riveting a cap onto the pommel base.

Included with the sword is a wooden scabbard which is wrapped in tight leather and fitted with a bronze finished and locket; the sturdily attached wooden suspension loop enables the sword to be slung from your own belt or baldric.
