Viking Saxon and Norman Helms were a popular European war combat helmet design of the Early Middle Ages. These medieval helmets were usually Spangenhelm types. The name Spangen refers to the metal strips that form the framework for the helmet and -helm simply means helmet. These helmets are usually a conical design and often include cheek guards and a Nasal to protect the nose. Some Spangenhelms include eye protection in the shape of a mask. Many of the Viking, Saxon and Norman helmets would incorporate a mail or chainmail aventail or neck guard.
