Bayonets

A bayonet is a blade that can be attached to the muzzle of a rifle or musket. Originally the bayonet was designed to convert an infantryman's musket into a pike. During the 17th century the musketeers would require a line of pikemen to protect them while they reloaded their muskets. After the invention of the Bayonet, musketeers would then be able to protect themselves as they now had in effect a pole weapon. Since that time soldiers have been trained to use their bayonets against cavalry units and other infantry units well into the modern century. During the 20th century the Bayonet has been shortened to allow the bayonet to be used as a general purpose military knife.

The Zouave Bayonet was a Sword Bayonet constructed with a fully formend hilt designed to fit onto a rifle muzzle. The Zouave Bayonet is fitted by means of a ring which formed part of the cross guard. A slot in the ribbed pommel would fit over a stud on the barrel.
