The Teutonic Knights were a German-based Roman Catholic Crusader order formed in the late 12th century in Acre. During the Middle Ages they were a crusading military order and wore white surcoats with a black cross. The knights sometimes used a cross pattée as their coat of arms; which later became the German Iron Cross.

The medieval Teutonic Knights played an important role controlling the port tolls of Acre. After the Crusades the Knights moved to Transylvania in 1211 to defend Hungary against the Cumans.

As with the Knights Templar the Teutonic Knights faced persecution through the years and continued to decline slowly through the middle ages but existed until 1809, when Napoleon Bonaparte ordered its dissolution.

The Order even survived Napoleon and continued to exist, headed by Habsburgs through World War I, to the present day.
