| Mail Bishop's Mantle | | A favorite of the Swiss and Landsknechts during the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this light armor was called a bishop's mantle because of its similarity to the vestments worn by priests. In the press of battle most blows would be directed downward (it was only when the press cleared and the cleanup began that blows were directed at the legs) and this mantle gave good protection without a great deal of weight. It was also quite flexible and did not hinder the shoulders or arms in battle. We are pleased to offer two examples of this important piece of armor. 25 1/2" neck opening. |

Mail Gauntlets Ref: 300008 To protect the back of the hand, we have added mail on our black leather gauntlets and also placed slightly cupped steel lames all around the cuff. These gauntlets offer good protection to the hand, wrist and lower arm from a sword slash or draw cut. There are a pair much like these at the Art Institute of Chicago that are highly decorative, however we have left ours plain to keep the price down and to allow them to be correct for a very long period of history from the Early Middle Ages well into the Renaissance.
Per Pair: $75.00

 | | The smaller and finer the rings, the better the protection. We are proud to offer the peak of the armorer's art (and patience) as it pertains to mail. Butted, 17 gauge steel rings are only 3/16" round offering unsurpassed protection. Incredibly dense, the rings provide ultimate defense against what may come your way. All warriors of the period prized this type of mail - it was purchased by the few who could afford it and presented to the hero that earned it. |

 | | No one knows for sure where and when mail was invented. The first mail was rings of wire, riveted together, with 4 rings passing through a fifth. There have been all sizes of rings and wire, some so fine that the mail was like liquid steel, and others very large, thick and quite heavy, as is our version that we are offering. The wire has been flattened into washers to produce a much denser weave. Only a strong warrior can bear up under this very strong mail shirt. It is very doubtful that a sword would be able to cut through this mail. Tournament proven by jousting World Champion, Lloyd Clark. He relies on this shirt to keep both sword and lance at bay. It has also been dip galvanized so it will resist rust. 16 gauge steel.Close Up |
