M16 German Helmet WWI - This replica of a German WWI helmet will appeal to WWI military collectors and re-enactors. Made from 18 gauge steel our helmet weighs exactly the same as the original German helmet. Comes in a standard Large size with a 22" (55.88cm) internal circumference.

The M1916 German Helmet or Stahlhelm was the first production model and was developed by Hauptmann Friedrich Schwerd. The earlier leather helmets proved ineffective in stopping shrapnel The M16 helmet was issued to the 1st Assault Battalion, in December 1915. It was introduced for regular service in the Verdun campaign, early 1916.

The M1916 model had two lugs on the front of the helmet. The lugs on each side of the helmet were used to support an optional shield, the (Stirnpanzer AH-6032). Not popular with the troops due to the weight they were used mainly by snipers. The lugs are hollow for ventilation under the helmet. The leather suspension liner, consisted of a headband with three segmented leather pouches, each holding padding materials, and leather or fabric cords could be adjusted for a comfortable fit. Factory issued helmets were generally painted field gray (Feldgrau), however troops often repainted their helmets in camouflage colors.
