| Knights of the Round Table The stirring legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have inspired this fine pewter set. King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, Sir Perceval and all the other knights, bring the Fabled Court of King Arthur back to life. Although the Arthurian legend originated in Celtic mythology, it gained its great popularity from early medieval literature. The name Arthur goes back to the 2nd century AD and can be traced as the Latin name of a clan from Rome headed by an Artorium, who is on record as having lived in Britain. The name Arthur would therefore have passed into the Celtic language during the Roman occupation of Celtic lands. The King Arthur from whom the myths were derived was known as early as the 9th century as a Welsh war leader who defended his country against Saxon invaders. Not much is known about the "actual" Arthur, but his life and battles must have been the stuff of legends, because the stories of his life evolved into the Arthurian mythos of the Medieval Era. First and foremost in France, the legend became a dominant theme of French literature during the early Medieval years, and then spread to English and Welsh versions which were derived from the French. The dangerous exploits and adventures of Medieval Knights, the Code of Chivalry, the quest for the holy grail, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - all these well-known figures from myth and history can come to life again through this intricately designed collection.
