ITALIAN MACE

Ref: 600624
By the 15th Century, armor had become so well developed that it was almost impervious to a sword cut and even a thrust. These two heavy maces, which evolved from man's oldest weapon, the club, could make short work of that armor. With a few full sound blows the best of plate should be so damaged taht the wearer's movement would be greatly impaired, and that lead quickly to defeat. both of these handsome examples have 8 flanges and are made from steel that has been blackened to a deep luster. The bottoms of the shafts are wrapped in black leather for an improvement grip.

English War Hammer

Ref: 600054
With the increasing sturdiness of plate armor, the sword became less and less effective against a fully armored knight. Axes and maces soon became the weapon of choice for hand-to-hand combat of the mounted knight. The war hammer quickly evolved and became one of the premier weapons. Generally it was lighter than the mace, and faster. Often it was made somewhat longer, so that the reach could be extended, but also shortened if need be. We ran across this in a private collection, and fell in love with it. Light, fast and deadly. Dates from about 1530 AD.

Flanged Maces

The club is no doubt the oldest weapon in man's arsenal, and the mace is its most high-minded variation. Always a symbol of power and authority, it remains so today. Its great advantages are simplicity and durability. Unlike a sword, or even an axe, it never needed to be sharpened, and was very effective against plate or mail armor. Maces have had many shapes, but the flanged version was in use by at least the later part of the 11th century. Both are expertly crafted.

Polish Mace (A)

Ref: 9-594
At a recent arms fair in London, we ran across a beautiful latter 16th Century Polish Mace in superb condition. We felt it worthy of replication as it is an excellent example of the style of mace favored by the Polish warriors. The Polish nobility were particularly fond of the mace, and carried them more often than the sword. They were frequently carried in the hand as defensive weapons when going out at night. Flanges are 3 1/2" x 1 1/4". Overall- 21 3/8", Wt. 2 lbs. 5 oz.

Gothic Maces

Able to crack, crush and dent armour, the mace was the favorite weapon of the knight in full plate. Also, it never needed sharpening! These are two stellar examples of a creative time when axes and maces sprouted architectural motifs. Each made of touch, high carbon steel with leather wrapped handle and brass decorative touches.
