New South Wales Fire Brigade Helmet – 20 Gauge Brass – Close Out
In colonial New South Wales firefighting was undertaken by volunteer brigades whose ability to respond to fires would vary. By the late 1800s the need for a professional fire fighting organization was recognized. In 1884 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (the precursor to the New South Wales Fire Brigade) was formed in Sydney Australia.

This helmet is a fine example of the protective headgear provided to firemen in the NSW Brigade. Our NSW Fireman Helmet, New South Wales Fire Brigade is made from brass, 1890-1900. This Brass Fireman's helmet comes with the inscription 'NSWFB' embossed over centre front. The NSW Fireman helmet has a cockade embossed with fire breathing dragons. It has a short peak at the front and a deeper rim at the back. Includes the Brass chain strap.

18th Century Italian Pewter Flintlock Pistol - Non-Firing
Flintlock pistols were so called because the lock uses a flint to strike sparks into the priming pan when the trigger is pulled. A small amount of gunpowder in this pan is ignited, which in turn ignites the main gunpowder charge in the barrel, firing the lead ball. Both the main charge and the ball were loaded from the front, or muzzle, of the barrel, after which the priming charge was poured into the pan – all very time consuming! Often the priming charge would burn but fail to ignite the main charge – whence the expression flash in the pan! The original of this particular flintlock pistol was made in Germany at the end of the 18th century. This non-firing version is accurately detailed - a great costume or conversation piece.
